Melbourne's Airport Is Building This Winter Around the People Flying In

October 29, 2026

In September 2026, Melbourne Orlando International Airport carried 35,929 domestic revenue passengers. That was 11.9% fewer than in September 2025. In the same month, its international passengers rose 2.3% to 18,777. So far in 2026, the airport has been losing domestic travelers while its international count grows. Its two biggest additions for winter, a new Delta nonstop to New York–LaGuardia and the return of Sun Country to Minneapolis–St. Paul, are both pitched mainly at people coming to Brevard County, not at people leaving it.

For anyone who lives in Melbourne, that shapes how this winter's schedule works. The new service is timed around guests, cruisers, and part-year residents. Your own trips out still run mostly on the routes that were already here.

Nine Months Leaning on International Traffic

The pattern holds across the year to date. The airport's September 2026 activity report puts year-to-date domestic revenue passengers at 376,810, down 4.7% from 395,574 over the same stretch of 2025. International passengers rose 2.1%, from 103,796 to 105,985, over those nine months. Total passengers for January through September 2026 came to 495,376, down 3.2%.

The gap has been getting wider. Through July, domestic revenue traffic was down 3.4% year to date. It was down 3.9% through August, and 4.7% through September.

TUI is the only international carrier on the airport's airline page. It flies to Melbourne from Birmingham, Belfast, Glasgow, London-Gatwick, Manchester, and Newcastle. At the authority's July 15, 2026 board meeting, staff said 2026 was TUI's fourth season at MLB. They also reported that the airport beat all four of TUI's passenger-survey goals and has ranked in TUI's worldwide top five for customer satisfaction over the last three years. MLB also won TUI's network-wide award for highest ancillary sales in May.

Part of the domestic dip has a documented cause. Sun Country did not fly to Melbourne in early 2026. Melissa Naughton, the airport's assistant director of business development and marketing, told Florida Today the reason was an equipment availability issue. That missing winter season is one piece of the domestic total. It is the only route-level explanation on the public record.

Two Winter Routes, Both Facing Inbound

Delta's new LaGuardia service starts December 19, 2026. It flies on Saturdays and Sundays only, and the final flight of the season is scheduled for May 2, 2027. In its announcement, the airport says the route is "timed to coincide with Port Canaveral's weekend cruise schedule." It also calls LaGuardia MLB's largest New York market. The weekend-only pattern follows from that: the flights are built around cruise departures and returns.

Sun Country returns January 22, 2027, with twice-weekly flights to Minneapolis–St. Paul through April 2. The airport's release describes the route as serving people who travel regularly between the Midwest and Central Florida. Airport executive director Greg Donovan described the demand to Florida Today this way:

"Many people split their time between Minnesota and Florida, while others travel to visit family and friends or enjoy a winter getaway on the Space Coast."

The same Florida Today report says Allegiant Air acquired Sun Country in a $1.5 billion deal finalized in May. Allegiant already flies to Melbourne, so this winter both of MLB's twice-weekly leisure carriers sit under one owner.

Here is how the winter nonstop map looks, based on the airport's airline page and the carriers' own schedules:

Airline Destination Frequency Winter 2026–27 dates
Delta New York–LaGuardia Saturdays and Sundays Dec. 19, 2026 to May 2, 2027
Sun Country Minneapolis–St. Paul Twice weekly Jan. 22 to April 2, 2027
Allegiant Pittsburgh Twice weekly Departures listed from early December 2026
Allegiant Allentown, Pa. Twice weekly Departures listed from early December 2026
Allegiant Cincinnati Twice weekly Departures listed in January 2027
Delta Atlanta Several daily Year-round
American Charlotte Several daily Year-round
TUI Six UK cities Per TUI schedule Per TUI schedule

Allegiant's dates come from live fare listings, which airlines can change at any time. For a trip out of Melbourne on a weekday, the dependable options are still Delta through Atlanta and American through Charlotte.

What a Weekend-Only New York Flight Means for Hosting

A Saturday-and-Sunday schedule works best for guests whose visits begin and end on a weekend. Someone flying down from LaGuardia for a holiday week, or for a cruise out of Port Canaveral with a few days in Melbourne before or after, can book the whole trip nonstop. Anything midweek still means connecting through Atlanta or Charlotte. The airport's release points out that MLB is the closest commercial airport to Port Canaveral.

The schedule could get more frequent. In August, airport executives told Florida Today that Delta would move to daily service if demand warrants. As of publication, that remains a possibility, and the announced schedule is still weekends only. The bookings this winter will show whether New York becomes a daily option for Melbourne travelers too.

The airport has a track record on this kind of route. Florida Today reported that Sun Country's Boeing 737 flights to the Twin Cities averaged 89% of capacity in 2023, the year the route debuted.

The Terminal Your Guests Will Walk Through

Anyone picking up visitors this winter will see a terminal partway through a large capital program. The September 2026 board packet lists these projects:

  • In-line baggage system: $37,475,966 total, with completion expected in January 2027. The EDS scanning machines are installed and the canopy roof is under way.
  • Atrium roof and skylight replacement: $1,109,000, with skylight installation expected to finish by November. New atrium ceilings and the last section of fire sprinklers will follow the skylight. Ceilings in ticketing, baggage claim, and the rental car areas are already done.
  • Terminal HVAC replacement: $5.5 million is budgeted for the current work. Central energy plant construction was slated to begin in November, pending grant funding. Staff expect the full replacement to take about three years, because the new systems must be running before the old ones come out.
  • Taxiway A rehabilitation: $42,483,962, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2027. It includes night work next to the runway.
  • Concourse seating: The board agenda recommended a $388,834.85 purchase of 436 replacement seats and related furniture.

For food before a flight, the airport's amenities page lists The Tap Room, Butcher Block Food on the Fly, Dunkin', and Tiki Hut.

The baggage system matters most for the winter peak. Its January 2027 target falls between Delta's December 19 launch and Sun Country's January 22 return. If it holds, the busiest months of the new schedule should run on the new equipment.

Where the Numbers Go From Here

The latest monthly report covers September, before either seasonal route starts. The months that will test MLB's winter plan are December through April. During that stretch, the LaGuardia weekends, the Twin Cities flights, and Allegiant's three routes are all scheduled to be flying out of the same terminal. Delta's first LaGuardia flight is scheduled for Saturday, December 19, 2026, and Sun Country's first Minneapolis–St. Paul flight follows on January 22, 2027.

For many owners along the Space Coast, a nonstop flight is part of how a home gets used: by family who visit every winter, by seasonal residents, and by guests who fly in for a cruise.
